Putting The Firm First: Human Capital Management to Improve Enterprise Performance

     - May 2003 Program

HR organizations increasingly are being asked to describe their contributions in terms of impact on enterprise performance. The need to relate initiatives to value creation is forcing a shift from doing “good” HR, in terms of the discipline’s own conception of itself, to HR that results in an engaged, aligned workforce with the skills and attitudes to be effective contributors. In this Briefing, SRG analysts will describe how HR’s ability to find, get, train, motivate, and retain the right people to create value should be based on directions from the Board and the executive team rather than by reference to HR practices elsewhere. They also will discuss the use of performance management paradigms that stress alignment of individual goals with those of the enterprise, and the role of HR in supporting and communicating corporate strategy during times of change through the performance management process.
